Forklift Truck Training
In order to be given certification as a forklift driver, you must undergo training on an industrial-powered forklift, or lift truck. The training must be specific to the forklift attachments and type that you would be using on the job location. Training must also reflect the atmosphere in which you will be working. Forklift safety should be a top priority for both the operator trainee and the trainer.
General Qualifications
Anybody using a forklift must undergo training and certification before assuming operator duties. Basic qualifications for using a forklift include being at least 18 years old and the physical capacity to control and operate the unit safely.
Pedestrian Safety
The safety of pedestrians must be a top concern of any forklift driver. Pedestrians in the vicinity of the forklift are at risk of injury or death from getting hit by the machine or its attachments. Pedestrians should always have the right of way, and forklift operators should honk their horns when working at crosswalks or intersections or near pedestrians.
Weather Conditions

Telescopic Forklifts
Telescopic forklift units are outfitted with a pronged lift on an arm which extends over the top of the truck providing great height and versatility. The crane, or arm, is referred to as a telescopic boom. The boom enables the operator to lift the cargo to great heights while maintaining a high degree of control. Standard forklifts could not move the cargo away from and towards the cab of the forklift, whereas a telescopic forklift could allow that movement. The telescopic forklift is usually utilized in agriculture and construction. It is recommended for applications where greater control and lift is needed.
In cases needing high volume carton handling, hydraulic attachments referred to as forklift carton clamp attachments are recommended. The attachment has arm pads with four way reversible rubber linings that enable the operator to use uniform clamping force when lifting a cargo. It is available with a backrest which protects the loads from damage.
A slip sheet attachment fits onto a slip sheet forklift. It is used for storing systems which don't utilize pallets. The attachment clamps onto the slip sheet and pulls it onto the forklift forks. This type of system is useful for intra-corporate deliveries and for overseas shipments.
A lift platform which is meant to hoist staff is referred to as a Man Basket. It attaches to the forklift forks and a strap or chain is utilized to attach the basket to the forklift carriage. The platform has railings to protect the personnel from falling to the ground. Brackets on the platform are used for fastening the safety harness of the worker.
