The crawler crane is a specific kind of mobile crane which is available with either a telescopic boom or a lattice boom that moves upon crawler tracks. As this unit is a self-propelled crane, it is capable of moving around a jobsite and completing tasks without a lot of set-up. Due to their enormous size and weight, crawler cranes are rather pricey and even difficult to transport from one place to another. The crawler's tracks provide stability to the machinery and enable the crane to function without using outriggers, although, there are some units that do utilize outriggers. What's more, the tracks provide the equipment's movement.
Early Mobile Cranes
The very first mobile cranes were originally mounted to train cars. They moved along short rail lines which were particularly made for the project. When the 20th century arrived, the crawler tractor evolved and this brought the introduction of crawler tracks to the construction business as well as the agricultural industry. Not long after, excavators adopted the crawler tracks and this further showcased the equipment's versatility. It was not long after before manufacturers of cranes decided that the crawler track market was a safe bet.
The First Crawler Crane
In the nineteen twenties, Northwest Engineering, a crane manufacturer in the United States, mounted its first crane on crawler tracks. It described the new machinery as a "locomotive crane, independent of tracks and moveable under its own power." By the mid-1920s, crawler tracks had become the chosen means of traction for heavy crane uses.
The Speedcrane
The Moore Speedcrane, developed by Charles and Ray Moore of Chicago, Illinois was one of the first attempts to copy the rails for cranes. Made in Fort Wayne, Indiana, the Speedcrane was a steam-powered, wheel-mounted, fifteen ton crane. During 1925, a company called Manitowoc Shipbuilding Co, from Manitowoc, Wisconsin recognized the tracked crane's potential and marketability. They decided to team up with the Moore brothers in order to manufacture it and go into business.

Visibility - Maximum visibility is provided for the operator from a side-stance position in both directions of travel. A low-profile offers a clear view mast as well a sculpted chassis enables the operators to be able to clearly see all around the truck, the fender and the fork tips. This optimum view improves overall safety and lessens damage.
Speed - Through Access 1 2 3 Technology combined with the latest AC traction control, top travel speeds are among the best in the industry and achieved. Performance levels are able to be custom tuned to be able to match the operator's skill level or the application needs.
Operator Safety & Comfort
The suspended floorboard offered by Crown's FlexRide significantly enhances overall work performance by improving comfort and exhaustion is greatly reduced. The constant vibration and shock can result in severe operator fatigue for those exposed to those motions everyday specially during travel over rough floors, dock plates and expansion joints.
